What is a Certified Civil Trial Attorney?
Certified Civil Trial Attorney is a designation granted by the New Jersey Supreme Court to attorneys who are able to demonstrate sufficient levels of experience, education, knowledge and skill in civil trial practice. The Supreme Court, through its Board on Attorney Certification, designates only those lawyers who are able to meet the standards set by the Board and approved by the Court.
What does it mean to a client that their attorney is Certified as a Trial Attorney?
An attorney must meet the following requirements to become Board Certified:
Must be a member in good standing of the New Jersey bar for 5 years or more. Mr. Faccenda has been a trial attorney for over 40 years.
Must have fulfilled ongoing continuing legal education and in the 3 years prior to filing an application, must have taken continuing legal education courses. Mr. Faccenda regularly attends over 20 hours of continuing legal education each year.
Must demonstrate a substantial level of experience in and preparation of litigated matters and demonstrate primary responsibility for a specific number of completed trials.
Must demonstrate an excellent reputation and been favorably evaluated by attorneys and judges familiar with him or her who attest to the applicant’s character and ability.
Must take and pass a written examination in civil trial law.
Why does New Jersey have a Trial Certification program?
The certification program helps the public find attorneys who have demonstrated proficiency in the specialized field of civil trial law. Certification also helps lawyers by giving them a way to make their experience known to the public and to other lawyers.
How many attorneys are certified in New Jersey?
As of March 2014, out of approximately 75,000 active lawyers in New Jersey, just over 1,000 or about 2%, were Board certified as Civil Trial Attorneys.
How does the consumer know if an attorney is Board certified?
Although many practicing trial attorneys now advertise in newspapers, websites, and on television, only attorneys certified by the New Jersey Supreme Court are entitled to use the designation “Certified Civil Trial Attorney” on their letterhead, business cards, websites, or in other advertisements.
